A couple of months ago, after taking the Nevada Bar, and while we were a little short handed, a Response to a Motion for Partial Summary Judgment snuck up on us. We asked for an extension. We were granted the extension from the other side just to have that extension withdrawn on the due date of the motion.

We filed on time, and we defeated the motion.

That’s not the story.

The story is that that same lawyer came to us on Friday, hat in hand, and asked for a two-month adjournment on the trial set to start next Monday. His client was moving.

I could have been tough. I could have been a son-of-a-bitch. I could have screwed him. It’s just not our way.

While you may want to put the screws to the other side, you cannot put the screws to the other side’s attorney. The attorney is just doing his or her job.

So we don’t make it personal against the other side, even if he would not extend the same courtesy to me.

As I tell my girls, “Be nice.”
